Spain’s basketball team has gotten off to a rocky start in trying to defend its world title at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey. The team lost to Lithuania yesterday 76-73 to run its record to 1-2. But don’t count the Spaniards out just yet. Remember Spain’s slow start at the World Cup? We all know how that turned out. And the way Spain’s basketball team has been playing the last few years, one might expect it to get its act together by the next round (the top four teams from each group in the FIBA tournament move on to the single-elimination round and Spain has a good chance to finish third in its group).
Let’s briefly review just how well Spain’s national team has been playing. In addition to the FIBA championship, the Spaniards are also the reigning European champions. They also took home silver at the Beijing Olympics, falling to a dominant U.S. team in the gold-medal game. Outside of the NBA, Spain boasts one of the best professional leagues in the world.
For Americans, who typically associate Spain with soccer, this will come as a bit of a surprise. When I was there in the late 90s, I’d often come across Spaniards looking for pick up games. And if they knew I was American then they would aggressively recruit me to play. I guess they either thought that as an American I must be good (they would end up disappointed) or they wanted to prove their mettle against citizens of the sport’s dominant country. I do believe they define a foul differently over there. Breathe on them and they’re grabbing the ball and going to the free throw line. But where does this growing obsession come from? Basketball actually has a long history in Spain and has really started to catch on in the last 30 years or so.
The “Father” of Spanish Basketball
In the early 1920s, a Spanish priest named Eusebio Millán Alonso came back to Spain after spending time in Cuba, where he learned the game of basketball. So Father Eusebio is also the father of Spanish basketball. He introduced it to his students in Barcelona with a special incentive, or perhaps threat. To get some of his pupils to focus on the new sport, he would forbid them from playing soccer until they had practiced basketball. The sport grew from there. Experts peg the sport’s increasing popularity in Spain to the success of the country’s national team.
Despite its recent success, the national team has had many ups and downs in its history, especially in the early years. It formed in 1935 and finished second that year in the European championship, losing to host Switzerland 24-18 (yes, that’s after four quarters — how things have changed). It didn’t finish higher than fifth again until 1973, when it was again the runner-up, this time to Yugoslavia. In the FIBA World Championship, Spain’s team only qualified for the tournament twice between 1950 and 1978, finishing 10th in 1950 and fifth in 1974.
1980s
After showing signs of life in the 1970s, the Spaniards’ basketball fortunes began to change in the next decade. In 1981, the national team finished fourth in the European championships and fourth again the next year in the world championships. In 1983, the team finished second in the European championships to Italy. But the most significant event in modern Spanish basketball came the next year at the Olympics in Los Angeles where the Spaniards took home silver. This “produced a quantum leap in the sport’s popularity,” according to Adrian Schubert in his book “A Social History of Spain.” Recently, U.S. basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski said of the Spaniards, according to USA Today, “They’re as good as anybody.”
So, expect to hear more of Spanish basketball as the Spaniards continue quite a remarkable sports run. And expect more stars from Spain’s professional league like Pau Gasol to make a name for themselves in the NBA. I for one hope Real Madrid star and national team member Sergio Llull ends up playing for the Houston Rockets. That might raise awareness of the proper pronunciation of my last name.
