Quick quiz: What’s the oldest European settlement in the U.S.? Hint: It’s not Jamestown! The Spanish founded St. Augustine, Florida in 1565, 43 years before Jamestown and 22 years before the settlers at Roanoke disappeared (which the British naturally blamed on the settlers at St. Augustine). But there’s a more obscure piece of trivia contained in the annals of St. Augustine’s history. The town is also home to one of the oldest – if not the oldest – Spanish American communities, the descendants of a group of Menorcans who were brought to English-controlled Florida as indentured servants in 1767.

To this day, there is strong memory in St. Augustine of the Menorcans, who came from the Spanish island of Menorca. Many of the oldest families of the city are descendants of the immigrants from that beautiful Balearic island. More than two hundred years after their arrival, the people of the area still refer to these descendants as the “Minorcans” (this being the English spelling). There’s a Minorcan Quarter, a Minorcan Cultural Society, Minorcan celebrations… even Minorcan clam chowder! It’s a testament to the strong cultural presence the group has maintained over the decades. But the story of how they became an integral part of America’s oldest city is harrowing and starts with a land grant made to an apparently cruel and duplicitous Scotsman named Andrew Turnbull.
History of the Menorcans
In 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War and passed control of Florida from Spain to Britain. Shortly thereafter Turnbull received a grant of land near present-day Daytona, about 60 miles south of St. Augustine. Turnbull decided to find workers for his land in Greece, where his wife was from. On the 1767 trip to Greece, Turnbull’s ship docked at Mahon, the capital of Menorca, which was then a British possession. From there, he first went to Italy and recruited 100 or so Italian men. He dropped them off in Menorca while he went to Greece to recruit the rest of his workforce. But the Italian men took a liking to the Menorcan women and when Turnbull returned – with far fewer Greeks than he had hoped for — many of his Italian workers were no longer single. He agreed to bring their new Menorcan brides to Florida. But several other Menorcan families, looking for a way out of what was at the time a harsh island life, begged to go as well. Given how things turned out, it’s hard to say Turnbull took pity on Menorca’s wretched refuse. Rather, he likely saw profit in their starving eyes. The Scotsman signed them up as indentured servants – roughly 1400 in all – and packed them on his ship. (Hence, what Turnbull had planned as a colony of Greeks turned out to be mostly Menorcan.) Their tortuous journey had begun.
It wouldn’t take long for the poor Menorcans likely to wish they had never left the island. There were three times as many colonists on the ship back to Florida than Turnbull had planned. On the journey, over 140 died. And when they reached New Smyrna, which was named after the town in Greece where Turnbull’s wife was born, the colony wasn’t ready as Turnbull had promised. It was swampland and the new colonists were forced to clear it. More than four hundred died in the first year alone. In the ensuing years they battled hunger, malaria, Native Americans and, probably worst of all, an unjust overseer in Turnbull. Even when colonists’ had fulfilled their obligation under the indentured servant agreement, Turnbull refused to grant them their freedom. The injustices led to a revolt, which was crushed; its leaders executed.
Word of the living conditions, however, finally reached Patrick Tonyn, the British governor of the territory who resided at St. Augustine, and he launched an investigation. Eventually, the Menorcan community was allowed to leave New Smyrna and move to St. Augustine. Roughly 600 Menorcans made it to St. Augustine after nearly 10 years in New Smyrna. They settled in the city and, according to historians and genealogists, became the cornerstone of St. Augustine’s population as it passed back into Spanish hands after the Revolutionary War and eventually to the United States following the Adams-Onis Treaty.
In 2000, as part of the celebration of the 430-year anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine, the city held a Minorcan Festa and Paseo St. Augustine, which were dreamed up by Menorcan descendant Suzette Chauvin after witnessing Menorcan cultural and religious traditions on a trip to the island.

Intro
Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish-born physician and wealthy member of the East Florida Society in London which was formed in 1766, conceived a plan to bring colonists of Greek, Italian, Minorcan and Turkish origins to Florida in the hopes of cultivating the land. Great Britain had acquired Florida around 1763.
The Turnbull venture: On March 31, 1768, a fleet consisting of the below-mentioned eight ships left Mahon, Minorca with over 1400 passengers. The fleet arrived in Gibraltar on April 3, 1768, then left Gibraltar on April 17, 1768. Of the 1403 passengers who had left Gibraltar, only 1,255 managed to reach the coast of East Florida as 148 of them perished on the high seas. Three children were born at sea: Eulalia Elquina (Alzina); Antonia Arnau; and Benito Buenaventura (unknown parents).
Four of the ships which carried some 700 immigrants, arrived in St. Augustine, Florida on June 26, 1768. The other four vessels had been carried off course by strong currents, but they eventually reached St. Augustine little by little, arriving one after the other, during the month of July, 1768.
